16 arrested in international anti-drug operation

Belgian police and customs services were part of a large scale anti drugs operation between 19 and 22 November in which sixteen people were arrested.

The operation, which also involved the Netherlands, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, and France, saw 860 people checked, of whom 97 had drugs on them and five were under the influence.

In addition, five vehicles were seized, according to the federal police.

More than 7,702 grammes of cannabis were seized during the operation, 3,979 of which were found on 19 November in the province of Luxembourg on a man with a fake identity card.

Two days later, police intercepted a car in France that had 1,500 grammes of cannabis as well as €5,200 and a loaded revolver. The occupants of the car also dumped a large amount of cocaine, part of it landing on the police officers’ car.

Finally, on 22 November, police in Antwerp found more than two kilogrammes of cannabis under the hood of a car in Antwerp.

A Dutchman in the province of Liège was also found to be in possession of heroin, and several passengers on low-cost busses in the province of West Flanders were in possession of small amounts of marijuana.

Earlier this month, Belgian police seized what they claimed was the largest-ever overseas drug bust “in the world” after finding over 11 tonnes of cocaine in the port of Antwerp.

Legalising cocaine is ‘something to consider,’ says Antwerp mayor

Legalising cocaine is “an option that people need to dare to consider,” according to the mayor of Antwerp, Bart De Wever (N-VA). De Wever, whose port city is one of the European continent’s major entry points for illegal drugs including cocaine, was interviewed by the authors of a new Dutch book,  Nederland, Drugsland,  published today. The book, by Volkskrant journalist Jan Tromp and Pieter Tops, a lecturer at Leiden university and at the Dutch police academy, looks at the shadowy side of the drugs trade, and suggests ways it may be tackled. In the book, De Volkskrant reports, De Wever – whose N-VA is the main opposition party in the federal parliament and the largest party in the Flemish government – says he has given up on the illusion that the war against drugs can be won. “ The battle against alcohol and nicotine has also been abandoned,” he says. “Those products are legalised. We accept the social consequences.” He makes it clear, the paper reports, that it would be “hor...

Europol shuts down massive illegal cigarette factory in Germany

One of Germany’s biggest illegal cigarette factories, equipped to produce 40 million cigarettes per month, was shut down following a raid organised by Europol. On Wednesday, Europol  reported  the arrest of 12 Ukrainian and Polish nationals between the ages of 28 and 59 who worked in a German factory in Kranenburg, close to the Dutch border. The raid took place on 18 August and involved 200 officers. The police confiscated 11 million cigarettes. Most cigarettes are believed to have been destined for the UK, where “the retail value of cigarettes is much higher than in Germany”. Europol is currently investigating whether the factory group can be linked to similar organisations in other European countries. The raid was part of international Operation LUPA, led by the German Customs Investigation Office of Essen/Branch Münster. The German Public Prosecutor’s Office of Kleve oversaw the operation in cooperation with Europol and the Polish Police Centre Bureau of Investigation. Euro...
